I was hoping to get this post up yesterday, in honor of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 155th birthday. But it’s never a bad time to share a good book, right? And in this case, the “good book” is actually a collection of stories about the greatest fictional detective of all time. What a way to start the holiday weekend!

My parents were the ones who introduced me to Sherlock Holmes. My mother read the Holmes stories when she was pregnant with me, and when I was a little girl my father would assuage the boredom of long car trips by telling me The Hound of the Baskervilles. So essentially, I’ve been a Holmes fan since I was in the womb, and I more or less came into the world wanting to smoke a pipe and wear a deerstalker cap. (Although, of course, the cap wasn’t in the Doyle stories: it became associated with Holmes due to illustrations in The Strand magazine.)

I started reading the stories for myself when I was about twelve, but until recently it had been years since I’d spent any quality time with Holmes and Watson. You can imagine how thrilling it was to find The Complete Sherlock Holmes in audiobook form. Now I can listen to the intrepid duo while I’m working, driving, cooking, sleeping… okay, maybe not while I’m sleeping. I’m currently about three-quarters of the way through the collection, and am loving every minute of it. I hope you will too!
