The inscription reads: “In memory of the men of this regiment who lost their lives at the Battle of Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864. Erected by their comrades and friends. Dedicated in 1907.”
On Saturday, my husband and I visited several Civil War memorials. This one, which commemorates the 128th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was especially touching. Rough-hewn from granite, standing about ten feet tall, it is there to remind us of one hundred and five men who died on October 19, 1864. As many have done before and since, they laid down their lives, far from home, in service to their country.
The land there is so green now: sun-kissed and serene in the late spring sunshine. May we never cease to be grateful for the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that people like me can stand at a roadside on a warm afternoon, comfortable in the knowledge of our freedom.
