Recently I was out and about with my sister, Rebecca. We wanted to find a nice place to go for a walk and see some pretty scenery. So Rebecca, with the spunky aplomb that belongs to those who are not yet 35, got on her phone, went tap-tap-tap, and found someplace truly amazing: Eastham Park in Front Royal, Virginia.
Front Royal is a beautiful town near the interchange of Routes 66 and 81. Among other things, it’s the location of the northernmost entrance to Skyline Drive; I’ve been visiting the town since I was a child, and I have always loved it there. But this park kicks the whole place up a notch.
Eastham Park was established in 2009, so it’s relatively new. It includes The Royal Shenandoah Greenway, a system of paths and trails which connects educational, historical, and commercial areas of the town.
Rebecca and I walked along the river trail, which is located on an old road bed, or “River Road,” which was used heavily between the 1750s and the Civil War, because it was the only major connecting road between Front Royal and points south.
We only saw a fraction of the park, and we’re going back to explore more as soon as possible. If you want to see pictures of anything specific at the park, or if you’d like to hear more about any of its features or history, just let me know! I’m always up for a little assignment.
